Tioga County is located in the southern part of New York, in a region known as the Southern Tier of the state. Tioga County has a total area of approximately 523 square miles of which 99% is land and 1% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 51,784 people, 19,725 households, and 14,320 families residing in Tioga County, New York. Out of New York's 58 counties, the county ranks as 42nd most populous. The Susquehanna River flows into Pennsylvania from Tioga County. It was named for an Indian word meaning "at the forks," describing a meeting place.
